What did we do before the internet?

I was 12 when AOL arose as some new computer thing where you could talk to people.

So I actually remember quite a bit of what we did to entertain and educate ourselves before the interwebs came along. Here are 10 things that got us through the ice ages.

We used to Play M.A.S.H - Mansion, apartment, shack, house.
We used “total phone” to get as many people on party line as possible. You had 3 lines and had to figure out who still had lines free to add more people. Then someone would hang up and a whole branch would fall off the line.
We used to make fortune tellers (cootie catchers) and the good ones would circulate.
We would go to the library and go to the “reference section” or use the card catalog to do research. You could copy stuff to take home for a dime.
We used to write our papers in cursive for final draft in order to be accepted by the teacher. Whiteout was a savior that stank to high hell, but improved every year: bottles> pens> strips!
We would pass notes, in lockers, desk cubbies, books or at lunch- to be devoured and laboriously responded to later.
We used the numbers on our beepers (upside down) to exchange complex messages like 411, 911, 143, “hello”, or “go to hell” (411 411 411 911 911 = get back to me right now!! or else I hate you. Repetition is like exclamation points).
We used the Sears (or other stores) catalog - as big as a phone book - to know what would be in the store this season. You could use that folded form in the middle to mail order.
We used to get free music and movies by dubbing tapes or using two VCRs to copy movies. You could stuff paper in that little hole to render any tape “blank”. And you could always record straight from the radio!
We’d build social networks via party and event invitations. If you weren’t invited, you were no friend!

The sun made me smile and so I stayed still, refused anything different.

It washed over me and browned my skin. Made me feel as a child in peer to the colors around me.

Everything is saturated and real. And then it isn’t.

Climbed over by the cool of dusk and the approaching cold of night. I feel I’m going blind. Colors diluted. My skin is light.

Though I am the same, everything else is changed.

Alas, the Sun left me behind.

And I’m a cartoon now. Drawn in cheerful colors, helpless to the flipping of pages. Inanimate. Read already.

In the dimness of dusk, hard even to see.

Phases, unacknowledged by me, like chapters of entire books, are illuminated elsewhere. I’m missing everything.

Left lacking depth, and directions. To have been colored passively.

Love is like lava on the sun. Churning and turning. It burns crisp the one holding on too tight. Looking too close. Sitting too still.

And then it moves on. With reality.

I need not the light, but energy. Once the horizon lets it go again, after this long night.

I’ll be in charge. Once the pages of the horizon turn they will no longer bind me here to simply endure the cold.

I’ll use that light to write my story, and the colors will be characters. As I progress and make me different, I’ll be gold.
